About Dental Crowns

Dental crowns serve several important purposes:

  • Strengthening weakened teeth
  • Supporting and protecting cracked teeth
  • Covering very large cavities
  • Restoring worn teeth
  • Alleviating bite imbalance
  • Concealing pronounced cosmetic imperfections, such as intrinsic stains or unusually shaped teeth

Dr. McEvoy only uses only tooth-colored material for dental crowns to ensure a natural appearance.

The Crowning Procedure

Before placing a crown, Dr. McEvoy will provide a thorough consultation to determine if it is the right treatment for your needs. If he determines that you are a candidate for a crown, he will numb your tooth and surrounding gums with our injection-free anesthetic. Next, he will reshape the tooth. If you require treatment for decay or damage, he will remove the affected portions of the tooth. In order to make the tooth accommodate the crown, he may remove a very small portion of the healthy tooth structure as well. This process will create a strong base for the restoration. Once the reshaping is complete, he will take digital impressions of your teeth. Your crown will be precisely fabricated according to these impressions. When the restoration is finished, Dr. McEvoy will try in the crown to ensure a proper fit. Next, he will use dental cement to attach it to your tooth. At this point, he can make fine adjustments to the crown to ensure that your bite is properly balanced.

Different Types of Crowns

Dr. McEvoy proudly offers several types of dental crowns. In many cases, he can provide a same-day restorations using our state-of-the-art CEREC® technology. This imaging system will create a computerized, three-dimensional impression of your tooth. The process requires only a quick scan of your teeth. This digital impression will guide our in-office milling machine as it creates a highly lifelike, durable dental crown out of a single block of color-matched porcelain. While you wait, you can relax and watch TV on 3-D virtual reality glasses.

We also provide lab-fabricated zirconia crowns. This advanced dental material is incredibly strong. In fact, your restoration will be virtually indestructible. To provide one of these crowns, Dr. McEvoy will send impressions of your teeth to our partner dental lab. Skilled technicians will craft a restoration that is a precise match to the shape and color of your natural teeth.
